Steve Frothingham

Steve is in his second stint at BRAIN. He was here at the beginning in 1992 while still working for a bike shop in Santa Fe, N.M. He wrote several articles for BRAIN's first issue and later joined the staff, eventually becoming managing editor and then executive editor.

After leaving BRAIN in 1997 he worked for several news organizations including The Associated Press and VeloNews before rejoining BRAIN as web editor in 2011.

He is based in Longmont, Colorado, and is an enthusiastic (and slow) road, mountain bike and cyclocross rider.

Giant and Trek say Specialized's high inventory is driving the discounts, but Specialized says it's business as usual.

LONGMONT, Colo. (BRAIN) — Three of the largest U.S. bike brands are offering deep discounts on bikes next month, possibly a response to high supplier inventory levels coming out of the winter, although all three brands say their inventory levels are just fine.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (BRAIN) — Marzocchi is unlikely to contribute much to Fox Factory’s bottom line for at least a year, Fox executives warned investors Wednesday, saying it will take some time and money to resurrect the Italy-based brand, which is currently dormant.

LAS VEGAS (BRAIN) — Gov. Hickenlooper is not the only elected official from Colorado who was at Interbike on Wednesday. Lori Buck, the mayor of Fruita, Colorado, was also here, promoting her city as a location for bike media events, R&D testing, and even corporate relocation.

MADISON, Wis. (BRAIN) — In a first for a major U.S. bike brand, Trek Bicycle will begin sales of complete bikes to consumers via its website in late September. Bikes will be shipped to the brand's retailers — not direct to consumers — for assembly, and retailers will receive a service commission on each sale.
