PACIFIC BEACH, Calif. (BRAIN) — Bicycle Discovery, a San Diego-area retailer with two locations, is running a promotion with Phat Cycles, a fat-tire beach cruiser brand.

 Bike Masters Ahwatukee has approximately 1,750 square feet of retail space.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (BRAIN) — Randy and Sally Pittaluga have opened their fifth bike shop in the Phoenix area, Bike Masters Ahwatukee, a Giant Partner Store. The Pittalugas, co-owners of the Bike Masters and Bikes Direct store brands, worked with the Giant Retail Services team in the design of their newest location.

MINNEAPOLIS (BRAIN) — Chrome Industries has opened a new brand retail store in Minneapolis, raising the number of Chrome HUB locations to seven.

IRVINE, Calif. (BRAIN) — This winter Shimano American is offering intensive, hands-on two-day training sesssion for shop technical staff at the company's office here.

David’s World Cycle is now up to 12 stores … and counting.

ORLANDO, Fla. (BRAIN)—A recent purchase of four bike shops in a one-month period has brought the store count at David’s World Cycle to 12. The greater Orlando-area retailer also has its sights on a fifth acquisition, with a deal set to close in November.

Gearin’ Up Bicycles operated out of a shipping container its first summer in business.

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — When Katie Lupo went shopping for a bike after relocating to D.C. from Madison, Wisconsin, for an internship, she was shocked to discover there were no used bike shops in the city. After finishing graduate school, Lupo decided to move to D.C. permanently and open her own. Lupo started Gearin’ Up Bicycles in late 2012 as a nonprofit community used bike shop, modeling it after a similar program in Madison called Dream Bikes.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (BRAIN) — When Two Wheel Tango unexpectedly closed in early October, many customers who had purchased bikes from one of its three stores wondered where they would take them for service.

Race Pace serves the first customers to patronize the Maryland retailer’s new location in Ellicott City.

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (BRAIN) — After learning that the strip mall where Race Pace Ellicott City was housed for 30 years would be torn down, owner Alex Obriecht began looking for a new building to rent. Buying property wasn’t something he had initially considered, but commercial rentals were expensive and difficult to find. So in December 2012, Obriecht purchased a 7,000-square-foot warehouse that had previously been used to store excavating equipment. He hired an architect and the building was gutted and remodeled inside and out. An additional 4,800 square feet of space was also added to the building. The process took more than 21 months — nearly a year longer than Obriecht had anticipated.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (BRAIN) — The National Bicycle Dealers Association is accepting submissions for its Supplier Scorecard program, which allows independent bicycle dealers to rate their suppliers.

PORTLAND, Ore. (BRAIN) — Sweetpea Bicycle, a Portland-based custom bike maker focused on women's bikes, is teaming up with Gladys Bikes, a retailer that specializes in serving women cyclists.

WILTON, Conn. (BRAIN) — The Cannondale Sports Store in Carle Place, New York, was recently featured in Hub Magazine, and was awarded a bronze award for retail experience in the 4th Annual Hub Prize competition hosted by the magazine.

ENCINITAS, Calif. (BRAIN) — A Southern California retailer has launched a policy mandating that customers sign a code of conduct on cycling behavior before purchasing shop-branded jerseys or cycling kits.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BRAIN) — The Mann Group has scheduled three Mann University Leadership Courses this winter for retail managers of outdoor, bicycle and running stores. The three-day classes are designed to give graduates tools to increase the profitability and performance of their stores.

Revolution sells Surly, Raleigh, Santa Cruz and other bike brands.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (BRAIN) — Besides gaining a better location and more space, Revolution Cycles also has also added taps to its store following a recent move. Owner Watts Dixon moved the shop about a mile down the road in May, putting it closer to a college campus.

SEATTLE (BRAIN) — Located a stone’s throw from the original Starbucks and the Pike Place Market on Seattle’s waterfront, Elliott Bay Bicycles will close its doors at the end of September. Framebuilder Bill Davidson and retailer Bob Freeman opened Elliott Bay in 1983.

LAS VEGAS (BRAIN) — The results are in and official for the National Bicycle Dealers Association's America's Best Bike Shops. The retail association will celebrate the nearly 300 shops that made its annual list, now in its second year, at a reception Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (BRAIN) — A fixture in the Southern California bike retail scene for more than two decades, Sean Flynn announced this week that he has sold his two stores to Specialized. Flynn opened the original Surf City Cyclery location as a Specialized concept store in Huntington Beach in 2006.
