PITTSBURGH (BRAIN) — Dick's Sporting Goods said it has agreed to acquire the specialty outdoor retailer Moosejaw from Walmart.
Walmart had acquired Moosejaw — which sells brands normally sold in speciality outdoor stores, including bike products, in brick-and-mortar locations and online — for $51 million in 2017. Dick's opened its own specialty retail chain, called Public Lands, 2021. Public Lands has seven stores and sells bike brands including Cannondale.
"We admire what Moosejaw has accomplished over the past 30 years as leaders in the outdoor industry and look forward to the opportunity to share insights and learn from one another," said Todd Spaletto, president of Public Lands and Senior Vice President of Dick's Sporting Goods. "We believe there's potential to grow the Moosejaw business and provide compelling experiences and an expanded product assortment to its millions of loyal customers."
Dick's said that once the acquisition closes, Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford will report to Spaletto. The deal is expected to close in March. Dick's did not release a purchase price and Walmart did not put out a statement.
Soon after Walmart acquired Moosejaw, some specialty brands including Black Diamond and Deuter demanded that their brands be removed from a portion of Walmart's website. The brands were included on Walmart's e-commerce site in a section "curated" by Moosejaw, but the brands said the association with Walmart was too close. Both brands continue to be sold at Moosejaw.
