PORTSMOUTH, NH (BRAIN)—A new Trek Bicycle Store opened recently in the historic seacoast town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Retailer Scott Berger and two business partners opened Trek Portsmouth early last month after about a year of planning.
Berger, who also owns Berger¹s Bike Shop in York, Maine, has been a Trek dealer since 1993 so partnering with the company for his new location was a natural fit.
Along with Trek and its other branded bikes like Gary Fisher and Mirraco, Berger also carries Guru to appeal to local triathletes.
There are two other local bike dealers in Portsmouth, but neither carries Trek. Berger chose the location based in part on the demographics.
"If you look at the territory around us and where in New Hampshire it's situated, it was probably the best pick with everything around us and the population base, the clientele that's close to it. We're near several major hospitals with a lot of upper level clientele we're drawing from," Berger said.
Berger opened the store in a strip mall, but gutted the existing space and built up the 6,200-square-foot shop from scratch. He offers a full gamut of bikes from kids to high-end road. He does professional fits, and also has a room dedicated to spin classes and showers.
Even though it rained 26 of the first 30 days Berger was open, he said business has been brisk.
"I've been very surprised even with the economic doom and gloom out there it has not bad," he said.
