LOS ANGELES (BRAIN) — Sports Business Daily is reporting that the Universal Sports TV channel will shut down next month.
According to an SBD report, executives from NBC, Universal's parent company, told Univeral Sports employees about the shut down this week, and notified distributors that its signal would be taken down Nov. 16.
Universal Sports broadcast a variety of international cycling events in the U.S, including the Vuelta a Espana, mountain biking's Roc d’Azur and last month's CrossVegas cyclocross race and UCI World Road Championships, held in Richmond, Va. It also broadcast a one-hour feature on the Interbike show last month.
According to the SBD report, NBC will pick up Universal's portfolio of Olympic sports. That could turn out be good news for some cycling fans who rely on Comcast cable television, because Universal has been unavailable on Comcast's cable channel lineup for several years.
