BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — More than 100 cities across the U.S. have submitted letters of intent to apply to be one of six selected to build protected bike lanes as part of PeopleForBikes’ Green Lane Project. The application period closes Jan. 14, 2014.

"We're very impressed with the number of cities actively building protected bike lanes," said Martha Roskowski, director of the Green Lane Project. "We hope that all cities with a protected bike lane in the pipeline will apply to be one of our next six focus cities."

Launched in 2012, the Green Lane Project has worked closely with six cities —  Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Memphis, Tennessee; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, California; and Washington, D.C. — to speed the installation of protected bikes lanes.

Selected cities will receive professional and technical support from national and international experts, intended to catalyze and enable major improvements to a city's bike network.

City government agencies can apply on the PeopleForBikes website. Winners will be announced in March.
