Montague launches full-sized, folding e-bike

Published March 24, 2021

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (BRAIN) — Folding bike supplier Montague is launching what it calls the world's first full-sized folding e-bike, designed with city dwellers in mind.

The Montague M-E1 is a performance trekking e-bike with 700c wheels that folds in seconds with a single quick release. The patent-pending design allows the mid-drive e-bike to be stored in closets and car trunks, keeping it safe from theft and out of the elements.

"We set out to build an e-bike for the urban environment — for riders that have been deterred from owning an e-bike due to space constraints, concerns about security, and a lack of portability with the current designs," said David Montague, the president and founder of Montague Bikes. "The urban mobility market is growing quickly in today's crowded cities, and commuters are looking for options. Riders need an e-bike that can deliver top-tier performance and stow in the closet, train, or car trunk. The foldable M-E1 is the solution."

The weight of the bike is supported by the double-leg kickstand during folding, so riders don't need to lift or support the bike in any way. Once folded, the bike can be rolled for transport by holding the handlebar and tilting the bike onto the wheels. The fold-and-roll feature is ideal for crossing a train platform or entering an elevator or apartment building, the company said.

For more compact storage, the handlebars fold with an additional quick release, creating a 38" x 38" x 13" package.

The bike has a Shimano STEPS E6100 mid-drive 250w motor with a 36V / 418Wh lithium battery pack for up to 50 miles of pedal assist per charge. Other specs include a Shimano Deore drivetrain, Deore hydraulic disc brakes, SR Suntour NEX suspension fork, and e-bike-specific Schwalbe Energizer Plus tires.

The step-through frame and quick release adjustable saddle height allows for one frame size to fit riders from 5’4″ to 6’4″.

The custom-drawn aluminum frame features an integrated rear rack. It also comes with mud guards and built-in Herrmans LED front and rear lights. Retail is $3599.
