Garmin releases its first heart rate monitors for swim use

Published July 22, 2015

OLATHE, Kan. (BRAIN) — Garmin on Wednesday announced its first underwater heart rate monitors, for swimmers and triathletes.

The new HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim are desiged to be compact and streamlined for minimal drag in the water.

They can store up to 20 hours of heart rate data during swims and can then upload data to a compatible Garmin device at the end of a workout or competition. They also can send real-time heart rate to a Garmin watch when the monitor is out of the water. "Last fall we introduced our Forerunner 920XT multisport watch, our most advanced all-in-one solution for triathlon training," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales.

"The HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim add another level for triathletes and swimmers, offering them the most comprehensive data to help them train for and achieve their goals." Specifically designed for triathletes, HRM-Tri is the smallest and lightest heart rate monitor from Garmin, capturing heart rate data during every leg of the race. The HRM-Tri features an easily adjustable strap with soft, rounded edges and covered seams for maximum comfort. On land, the HRM-Tri can also record advanced running dynamics including cadence, vertical oscillation and ground-contact time. With a non-slip strap design, HRM-Swim is ideal for capturing heart rate while training in the pool. Durable and compact, the strap is designed to stay in place during push-offs and creates minimal drag through the water. It stores heart rate data underwater and forwards it after the swim to a connected compatible device.

The user-replaceable HRM-Tri battery lasts up to 10 months and the HRM-Swim battery lasts up to 18 months.

HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim will begin shipping in the third quarter of this year and will be available individually for a suggested retail price of $129.99 and $99.99, respectively, or as an accessory bundle for $199.99. A special edition Forerunner 920XT Tri Bundle will also be available, which includes a black/silver Forerunner 920XT, HRM-Tri, HRM-Swim and quick release kit, for a suggested retail price of $599.99.
