GUELPH, Ontario (BRAIN) — Jason ‘Jay’ Filer, owner and lead instructor of Canada’s only bicycle mechanic certification school, has died. Even though Filer had been fighting a two-year battle with cancer of the esophagus, he passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 3. He was 43.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (BRAIN) — Debra Healy Deem, wife of Cycle Werks owner Paul Deem, died from injuries sustained in a collision with a minivan last month. She was 58.

SEATTLE, WA (BRAIN) — REI has appointed retail veteran Jerry Stritzke as its new president and CEO, replacing Sally Jewell, who left the company in April when she was confirmed as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — Leisure Trends Group recently released results from its Retail POS Survey conducted in August. Representatives from multiple sporting goods industries took the survey, with 237 IBDs participating—the most of any industry. 

TALENT, OR (BRAIN) — Flywheel Bicycle Solutions in southwestern Oregon’s Rogue Valley will soon become the area’s first bike shop to serve beer and wine. Owner Ian Bagshaw plans to put in six beer taps and pour mostly local brews during regular business hours. 

MOSCOW, ID (BRAIN) — New retailer Rolling Hills Bikes recently opened in downtown Moscow, home of the University of Idaho. Andrew Pratt and Collin Priebe moved to Moscow from Bellingham, Wash., where they both worked for several years at Kulshan Bikes.

VALLEJO, CA (BRAIN) — When Authorized Bicycle Shop owner Mike Kramer made the decision to retire, he didn’t want to sell the store to just anyone.

“I went to my employees and told them it was time for me to get out,” said Kramer. “And I proposed a plan that would make it easy for them to buy the shop.”

PITTSBURGH, PA (BRAIN) — Dick’s Sporting Goods reported net income of $88.9 million for its fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 3, up 9.1 percent from the same period last year.

BOISE, ID (BRAIN) — Multi-sport retailer Idaho Mountain Touring has opened a second location in Meridian, just west of its downtown Boise store. The 6,000-square-foot Meridian store, which opened in June, is a full-service shop, carrying bicycles from Giant and Trek.

LOS ANGELES, CA (BRAIN) — Sport Chalet, Inc. is reporting a 2.8 percent sales decrease in its first quarter, which ended June 30, compared to the same period last year. Sales came in at $81.5 million, down from $83.8 million last year.

MADISON, WI (BRAIN) — Specialty retailer Endurance House announced Friday that it has finalized a franchise agreement with the newly formed company Karpe Diem LLC to open three stores in the Atlanta, Georgia, metro area within the next four years.
