Outdoor industry looks to expand sustainability among bike suppliers

Published November 26, 2012

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — The outdoor industry is reaching out to the bike business to encourage sustainable practices in an effort to develop standards for equipment manufacturing before international regulators mandate such standards.

The Outdoor Industry Association is hosting a free online webinar Thursday to introduce the idea to the bike industry. Executives from Specialized and other bike companies are expected to participate in the call, which is being promoted by the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association.

The OIA and its member companies have collaborated on a five-year program of creating sustainability standards under the auspices of its Sustainability Working Group, a collective of more than 200 brands in the outdoor industry. Members include REI, Timberland, Patagonia, and many others.

The flagship tool developed by the working group is called the Higg Index and is about to expand from apparel to equipment, including bike gear.

The OIA Sustainability Working Group Introduction for the Bike Industry is being held November 29 at 10:00 am MT.
