SEATTLE (BRAIN) — REI Co-op will close its downtown Portland, Oregon, store early next year in reaction to increased break-ins and thefts.
In an email sent to store customers, the decision to close the location after nearly 20 years comes with the safety in mind of the store's Pearl District employees, said REI, which also noted the number of break-ins and thefts reached its highest number in two decades despite adding extra security.
REI also said it has outgrown the location and is evaluating other opportunities at new locations. REI has other area stores in Tualatin, Hillsboro, and Clackamas.
Last November on Black Friday, a car crashed through the front doors of the Pearl District store, its third break-in in a week.
