Boulder, CO — June 23, 2026 — Since becoming the Official Bike Insurance Partner of IMBA in 2023, BikeInsure has helped protect mountain bikes and electric mountain bikes across the United States by enabling owners to offset financial risk associated with theft and accidental damage. Three years of claims experience are now revealing important insights into how mountain bikers and electric mountain bikers experience loss — and why dedicated bike insurance matters.
Most mountain bikers and electric mountain bikers are not racing. They ride for recreation, trail exploration, fitness, transportation, and adventure. Those riding habits are reflected in the real-world claims experience of International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) members enrolled in BikeInsure's Bike Ride Insure (Casual) and Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) categories.
Since launching their partnership in 2023, IMBA and BikeInsure have observed a claims profile that differs significantly from what is commonly seen among competitive cyclists. While accidental damage accounted for most losses, theft claims produced the most severe financial consequences.
WHAT DID 3 YEARS OF IMBA MEMBER CLAIMS REVEAL?
Across three years of claims experience involving IMBA-referred members, BikeInsure paid an average of $3,353 per claim.
Several noteworthy trends emerged:
• $3,353 average paid claim
• 67% of claims involved accidental damage and 33% involved theft
• 33% enrolled for Bike Accident Only Coverage, while 67% added optional theft coverage
• 67% of claims paid within 5 days
• 33% of claims paid within 2 days
The claims data reveals an important insight for mountain bike and electric mountain bike owners: while accidental damage occurred more frequently, theft losses produced the most severe financial consequences.
"When members encounter problems, they tend to let us know," said Anthony Duncan of IMBA. "Since launching our BikeInsure partnership in 2023, IMBA has not received any complaints related to BikeInsure from our members. That stands out because, with some insurance programs we've worked with in the past, member issues occasionally required our attention. The absence of those concerns reflects positively on the experience BikeInsure is delivering and reinforces the value of making BikeInsure available as a member benefit."
WHY DO CASUAL CYCLISTS EXPERIENCE FEWER CLAIMS?
Most IMBA members participate in recreational mountain biking, electric mountain biking, fitness riding, commuting, trail riding, and other forms of non-competitive cycling.
Unlike competitive cycling environments, recreational riding generally avoids mass-start events, group riding, racing speeds, and other circumstances that increase both claim frequency and claim severity.
As a result, the claims experience of IMBA members has generally reflected fewer losses than are typically observed among competitive cyclists, while still demonstrating the importance of protecting high-value mountain bikes and electric mountain bikes from accidental damage and theft.
Interestingly, while most IMBA-referred members enroll under BikeInsure's Bike Ride Insure (Casual) and Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) categories, a majority of claims submitted by IMBA-referred members involved bicycles insured under Bike Race Insure (Competitive). This reflects the increased risk exposure associated with racing and competitive cycling activities and helps explain why BikeInsure offers distinct coverage categories based on riding style and usage.
That difference in expected loss is reflected in the distinction between BikeInsure's Bike Ride Insure (Casual), Bike Race Insure (Competitive), and Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) categories.
WHY THEFT PROTECTION MATTERS
Although accidental damage accounted for the majority of IMBA member claims, theft losses produced the most severe financial consequences. The average theft claim exceeded seventeen times the average accidental-damage claim payment, highlighting why theft remains a significant financial exposure for owners of mountain bikes and electric mountain bikes.
Notably, two-thirds of IMBA claimants had elected to add optional theft coverage to their policy. The claims experience suggests many mountain bike and electric mountain bike owners recognize that while theft occurs less frequently than accidental damage, the financial consequences can be substantially greater when it does occur.
For many riders, a bicycle theft represents the complete loss of a valuable piece of equipment that may have taken years to acquire and customize.
Whether a bicycle or e-bike is stolen from a garage, vehicle, trailhead, workplace, campground, or other covered circumstance, the financial consequences can be substantial.
WHY ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKES DESERVE SPECIAL ATTENTION
Electric mountain bikes continue to grow in popularity as riders seek greater range, more trail access, and new riding experiences.
At the same time, e-mountain bikes frequently represent a larger financial investment than traditional mountain bikes. Many riders have several thousand dollars invested in their electric mountain bike and related upgrades.
As the value of electric mountain bikes increases, so does the importance of protecting that investment from accidental damage and theft.
BikeInsure's Electric Bike Insure (E-Bike) category was designed specifically for Class 1, 2, and 3 electric bicycles, helping owners offset the financial risk associated with accidental damage and theft.
WHY MEMBER BENEFITS MATTER
"Being altruistic is one of many reasons members join or renew with their local trail organizations," Duncan added. "Member benefits help deliver tangible value beyond supporting trails and advocacy. Partnerships like BikeInsure give our members access to meaningful bicycle and e-bike insurance while reinforcing the overall value of being part of the IMBA community."
For mountain bikers and electric mountain bikers, the lesson from three years of IMBA claims experience is straightforward: while recreational riders generally experience fewer losses than competitive cyclists, theft remains a meaningful financial exposure.
Duncan added, "BikeInsure continues to help IMBA members offset financial risk by protecting the investment they have made in their bicycles and e-bikes. Based on our members' experience since 2023, IMBA is proud to continue promoting BikeInsure as a valued member benefit."
