PeopleForBikes, in partnership with Call2Recycle and dozens of bike industry leaders, is proud to announce several significant milestones for its e-bike battery recycling program. Since launching two years ago, the joint program facilitated the collection and recycling of 85,000 pounds of e-bike batteries with the recruitment of more than 2,100 retail drop-off locations nationwide.

As the first comprehensive e-bike battery recycling program in the U.S., the program sets a precedent for sustainable practices and environmental stewardship and serves as a model for cities and states to adopt their own programs.

The e-bike battery recycling program is supported by more than 50 leading bicycle industry companies. The program strives to divert harmful materials from landfills, promote a circular economy, and make recycling more convenient for consumers in all 50 states.

Participating companies proactively position their brand to comply with increasing state-level legislation mandating lithium-ion battery recycling. Existing bills in Washington, Illinois, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. establish regulations requiring brands to recapture end-of-life batteries and the e-bike battery recycling program meets those requirements.

“While there is more work to be done, we are immensely proud of the progress made through the battery recycling program. This initiative exemplifies PeopleForBikes’ commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability within the bicycle industry,” said Jenn Dice, president and CEO of PeopleForBikes. “The program offers brands and consumers a proactive solution to battery recycling as more cities and states across the country look to address and legislate e-bike battery safety."

“The bicycle industry’s leadership in battery recycling has pushed other industries to follow suit,” said Rob Latham, e-bike program manager at Call2Recycle. “The vast network of drop-off locations and participating manufacturers is a clear indication of the program’s success.”
