Square launches online marketplace

Published June 27, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (BRAIN) — Square, best known for its credit card reader for iPhones and iPads, has launched an online marketplace, allowing local businesses to list their inventory online and accept orders through Square Market.

Retailers can open an online store in Square Market for free with items, photos, and a business profile. There is no charge for listing items but a fee of 2.75 percent per item sold.

Many bike shops, especially smaller operations, already make use of Square's credit card reader, and its POS register system, and it appears several have begun using the Square Market. The company even features a fictional bike shop on its web page showing how the new service works
