Santa Cruz recalling Heckler 9 E-MTBs because of faulty battery latch

Published May 6, 2022

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Santa Cruz Bicycles has recalled some 2022 Heckler 9 E-MTBs because the latch securing the battery pack can fail, allowing it to dislodge from the frame and creating a fire hazard.

About 1,600 bikes are affected. Additionally, the latch spring can cause wear on the battery pack housing over time, also posing a fire hazard. Santa Cruz received 10 reports of batteries falling out of the frame and two reports of the latch spring causing added housing wear. No injuries or fires have been reported.

The bikes were sold in gloss avocado green or maritime gray colors. The models come with an interchangeable 720wh battery. "Santa Cruz" is printed on each side of the downtube with Heckler printed on the top tube and inside the left chainstay.

Consumers should stop riding the recalled models and contact an authorized Santa Cruz dealer for a free replacement of the latch spring and the installation of a battery wear plate. Those who purchased the bike online or don't reside near a Santa Cruz dealer should go to santacruzbicycles.com/dealers. The battery should be removed or secured before transporting. Santa Cruz is contacting all known purchasers directly.

The bikes were sold at bike shops and online at santacruzbicycles.com from January 2022 through March 2022 for between $8,200 and $13,300.
