Team Rwanda to Ride Schwinn Bicycles

Published October 16, 2007

MADISON, WI (BRAIN)--Pacific Cycle, owner of the Schwinn Bicycles brand, is providing Team Rwanda with Schwinn Peloton full-carbon road race bikes for the team's training and racing needs.

Team Rwanda, the first-ever national Rwandan cycling team, is the result of Project Rwanda, a philanthropic initiative that Pacific Cycle and Schwinn also support. Project Rwanda is committed to furthering the economic development of Rwanda through initiatives based on the bicycle as a tool and symbol of hope. Team Rwanda’s inaugural U.S. race is the upcoming Tour of the Gila in New Mexico.

Pacific Cycle president and chief executive officer Jeff Frehner is on Project Rwanda’s board of directors.

“I’m very pleased to provide Schwinn road race bikes to Team Rwanda,” Frehner said. “Team Rwanda embodies the spirit of Project Rwanda, and I believe the team will surprise the cycling world with their talent, drive and passion for the sport."

Team Rwanda’s five riders will make Silver City, New Mexico, their first stop in their first-ever visit to American soil. After the Tour of the Gila, they will go on to compete in other American races during their stay in the United States. They return home to race the Tour of Rwanda on June 19, and later the African Games.
