Pat Cunnane receives award from Philly bike coalition

PHILADELPHIA (BRAIN) — Pat Cunnane, the CEO of Advanced Sports Enterprises, has received the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia's Maguire Family Award.

Cunnane was presented with the award last week at the third annual Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia's gala. The award honors those who positively impact the local community in education, fitness and youth development.

Cunnane is a founding member of the Cadence Cycling Foundation, which merged with the Bicycle Coalition in 2013. Cadence fosters healthy habits, independence and leadership among Philadelphia high school students through competitive cycling.

Cunnane said the BCGP is unique in that the Cadence Youth Cycling Foundation manages to bring together very different kinds of cyclists to get behind its cause.

"The same cyclists who are squeezing into their Lycra to do hill repeats are having productive conversations about bike safety and infrastructure developments," he said. "The Cadence program is so compelling and so successful because not only does it expose youth to cycling, it focuses on leadership and good citizenship."

"It's a wonderful honor to receive this award, and it's a credit to the work that the BCGP does," Cunnane said. "Their work generates real results. Sometimes that means providing a better bike path for the morning commuter. Other times, that means opening up a whole new world for a kid who might never have had the chance to race a bicycle."
