Tim Johnson ride to raise $100K for advocacy

BOULDER, CO—More than 25 riders will pedal from Boston to Washington, D.C. as part of Tim Johnson’s Ride on Washington to raise funds for the Bikes Belong Foundation. The group will start the 500-mile, five-day journey March 16.

Cyclocross racer Tim Johnson created the Ride on Washington after attending the National Bike Summit in 2010. He organized the first ride in just six weeks in 2011. Six other riders joined him, raising $25,000. This year he’s inviting the general public to support the ride by making pledges at www.rideonwashington.org.

The ride is sponsored by SRAM and Volkswagen. Johnson hopes to raise $100,000 and build awareness for the health and environmental benefits of cycling. It starts at Boston’s City Hall Plaza, continuing to Hartford, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore before ending at the National Bike Summit in Washington D.C., on March 20.

The riders include professional cyclists, triathletes and executives from the cycling, music and financial industries. Youth groups in each city will also join the festivities, including children from the School of Harlem that will ride through Central Park.

Other sponsors include Bicycling magazine, Breezer, Cannondale, CatEye, Firefly Bicycles, Mad Alchemy, Skratch Labs and Red Bull.
