DOWNIEVILLE, CA (BRAIN)—After some mental hardship and several lengthy meetings with Downieville residents, local business owners, county planners, wildlife biologists, hydrologists, Forest Service Rangers and Congressional Representatives the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has secured a special-use permit to operate the Downieville Classic in both 2010 and 2011. The mountain bike race and festival will be held July 9-11, 2010.
Santa Cruz Bicycles is back as title sponsor of the event. “We are equal parts proud and honored to be returning to the Downieville Classic as title sponsor. Our relationship with this event goes all the way back to its roots, not long after we started out as a company. Our employees come to Downieville on vacation, or engineers come here to test bikes and ideas, and we consider this to be our “home” race,” said Mike Ferrentino, Santa Cruz Bicycles marketing guru.
“The scope of this event—days of fun in the summer Sierras built around a truly demanding race for bikes and riders alike—is all-encompassing. It tests your climbing legs, your stamina, your handling skills, your tires, your suspension, your luck, and most likely your liver. There’s nothing else like it. And that’s a big part of the reason we keep coming back. Well, that, and they feed us real well,” Ferrentino added.
Registration for the cross-country and all-mountain races will open February 19 at 8 p.m. at www.active.com.
