Old Murray Chief Bicycle Designer Dies

Published January 28, 2008

CLEVELAND, OH (BRAIN)—Viktor Schreckengost, who served as chief bicycle designer for Murray Ohio Co., has died. He was 101.

Schreckengost released his first design, the 1939 Mercury Bicycle, at the New York World's Fair. In the early 1940's Schreckengost quietly began revolutionizing the manufacturing of children's pedal cars.

"He was gentleman's gentleman," said Gene Smith, who worked nine years for Murray as an assistant territory manager for California and Arizona. "Just a real kind person. Never had anything bad to day about anyone."
