Published September 17, 2020

GIRONA, Spain (BRAIN) —The Sea Otter Europe cycling festival has been canceled, but organizers said that some of the event's races will be held under stringent COVID-19 measures. The event was to have been held Sept. 25-27.

Races will be held outdoors with a significant reduction in the number of participants, while the festival's commercial area and expo zone have been canceled due to new COVID-19 measures.

It would have been the fourth edition of the Sea Otter Europe Costa Brava-Girona Bike Show,w which was originally scheduled for May but postponed to the September dates due to the pandemic. The 2010 May event attracted 60,000 visitors from more than 25 different countries, with over 6,000 participants taking part in sporting events, and over 350 exhibiting brands.

Registration for Sea Otter Europe's races is still open. These include UCI-sanctioned MTB Marathon and XCC race, a road race and a gravel ride.

Dates for a 2021 event are to be announced.

In May, organizers of Sea Otter Australia, which was to hold its inaugural event in October, announced they had postponed it to October 2021. Sea Otter Canada also has canceled this year's event.

All the Sea Otter events are participating in Sea Otter Play, a virtual experience that opened Thursday. For more information see the event's official guide.
