Sea Otter moves event to October because of ongoing COVID-19 concerns

Published January 11, 2021

MONTEREY, Calif. (BRAIN) — The Sea Otter Classic has moved its event to October from May because of the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

Sea Otter, traditionally held in April, is now scheduled for Oct. 7-10 in Monterey. The May 20-23, 2021, dates were originally announced in November.

"After recent discussions with health and permitting officials, we've determined we will not be able to conduct an event in May," the event announced Monday.

Sea Otter did not hold an in-person event in 2020 due to COVID-19. It first rescheduled the April event for October and then created a virtual event, Sea Otter Play, which was held in September.

California has recorded more than 30,000 deaths since the pandemic started last year, according to Johns Hopkins University data. State officials reported over the weekend a two-day record of 1,163 deaths.
