AUSTIN, TEXAS (BRAIN)—Lance Armstrong’s Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop is set to open tomorrow (Saturday, May 9) in downtown Austin, Texas.
The grand opening celebration starts at 7 a.m. and includes book signings, special guests and giveaways, according to the Mellow Johnny’s Web site.
The seven-time Tour de France winner announced his retail plans in February, saying he wanted Austin, his hometown, to gain more of a bike culture, and would emphasize commuting by bike.
In addition to sales and service areas, the 18,000-square-foot shop will feature a training facility, showers, locker rooms and free bike storage to cater to commuters and a coffee shop.
Mellow Johnny’s will carry Trek, the brand Armstrong helped boost with his Tour victories, as well as fixed-gear, commuter, mountain and handmade bikes from other brands.
Mellow Johnny is a nickname earned by Armstrong while wearing the yellow jersey, or maillot jaune, in the Tour.
Craig Staley will manage the shop, which is owned by Armstrong and his business partner Bart Knaggs.
