WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Kids bike manufacturer Woom Bikes USA is recalling its Original models because the stem and handlebar can detach. About 84,000 bikes are affected in the U.S. with an additional 533 sold in Canada.
There have been 77 reports in the U.S. of the handlebar stem detaching or loosening, resulting in 19 injuries involving bruising, cuts, or abrasions. There have been no reported incidents in Canada.
The recall includes all sizes of woom's Original 2018-2021 models. The stems have one silver bolt clamping onto the steerer tube. The bikes are designed for kids ages 18 months to 14 years. They were sold in seven versions: woom 1, woom 1 Plus, woom 2, woom 3, woom 4, woom 5, and woom 6.
The woom 1 and woom 1 PLUS are balance bikes, woom 2 through 6 are pedal bikes. They were sold in red, green, blue, purple, and yellow. The word "woom" in white letters is displayed on the sides of the downtube. The word "woom" in metallic letters also is visible on the headtube. The markings "#woombikes" in black letters on chainstay and wheel size in black are on the sides of the fork.
Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles and contact woom Bikes USA for a free repair kit. Woom Bikes USA is contacting all known purchasers directly.
The bikes weresold at woom.com, amazon.com and bike stores nationwide from September 2018 through March 2022 for between $200 and $530. According to the Canadian recall notice, the bikes were made in Cambodia and Vietnam.
