Wilcockson and O'Grady leave Velo

Published January 3, 2012

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—Cycling journalist John Wilcockson is leaving Velo magazine for the Move Press title Peloton. Patrick O'Grady, a part-time web editor and cartoonist for Velo and VeloNews.com, also has left the organization.

Wilcockson will be Editor At Large for Peloton; he will have a weekly column on www.pelotonmagazine.com, a feature in every magazine issue and will lead the magazine's coverage of the Tour de France online and in print.

Wilcockson, who has covered more than 40 Tours de France, was a co-founder of Inside Communications, VeloNews' publisher. San Diego-based Competitor Group Inc. purchased Inside in 2008.

CGI laid off Wilcockson in August this year, but he continued to write for the magazine and for VeloNews.com on a freelance basis until recently.

O"Grady is a long time cartoonist, contributor and copy editor for Velo magazine (formerly VeloNews). In recent years he's contributed a cartoon to each issue of the magazine and edited VeloNews.com two days a week. He also writes and draws cartoons for Bicycle Retailer & Industry News and contributes to Adventure Cyclist magazine. He announced his departure from VeloNews on his blog this weekend.

O'Grady said he was stepping down from VeloNews "to spend more time with the voices in my head."

Other recent VeloNews departures include Charles Pelkey, who was laid off in August with Wilcockson and who now practices law and writes a weekly column for RedKitePrayer.com. Steve Frothingham resigned from VeloNews in November to become web editor of BicycleRetailer.com. VeloNews' then-editor in chief Ben Delaney resigned in July and now works for Specialized.
