Santa Cruz Fires Hitting Home

Published May 26, 2008

MORGAN HILL, CA (BRAIN)—Specialized's marketing chief Nic Sims said the Summit Fire had a couple of Specialized employees, Robert Egger and Chris d'Alusio, worried about their houses late last week.

"You can clearly see the smoke from the office," Sims said.

The blaze, which started in an empty lot near Summit Road early Thursday, was 35 percent contained late Saturday after consuming more than 3,840 acres in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties. Twenty homes and 11 outbuildings had been destroyed as of Saturday night.

"The Daily World Championship ride you could smell and see it on a couple of sections of the ride," Sims said. "I found the smoke really opened my lungs up for the climbs."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Santa Clara County.
