Be on the lookout: Thieves steal container of Tern bikes

Published August 16, 2024

(BRAIN) — Tern is asking retailers to be on the lookout for 48 of its bikes and e-bikes that were stolen while in transport by rail from Los Angelas to a Tern warehouse in Illinois last month.

The company is working with law enforcement and insurers following the theft of a container of bikes worth a total of about $170,000.

"We don't know exactly where the bikes were stolen, but the container was offloaded in the Port of LA, and was then sent to our Illinois warehouse by rail. It showed up at the rail terminal without a seal on the container and when it was delivered to the warehouse, the container was missing these bikes," a Tern representative told BRAIN. the representative said one of the stolen bikes was briefly listed on eBay in Southern California so it's likely the bikes were stolen in California.

The bikes stolen include 33 HSD P5i e-cargo bikes in a limited edition color scheme. Additionally, none of these bikes had batteries.

"If a Tern shows up without a battery, it could have been stolen," the representative said.

The models stolen were:

  • 33 HSD P5i in blue/green. Tern has imported just 100 e-bikes in this color scheme for the North American market. None of these stolen e-bikes had batteries.
  • 5 Verge x11 non-electric folding bikes in Chrome/Red
  • 5 Verge x11 non-electric folding bikes in Black/Magenta
