BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — Matt Moore, who has been distributor QBP's general counsel since 2005, has joined the industry trade group PeopleForBikes in the same role.
In his new position, part of PeopleForBikes' Business Network team, Moore will be responsible for managing policy, trade, tariff and general legal matters for the organization.
"I am incredibly excited to continue my advocacy work for the bicycle industry by joining the amazing team at PeopleForBikes. I've been working as a volunteer at the local, state and federal levels for almost twenty years, helping to grow our hometown mountain bike trails, improving Minnesota's cycling laws and leading national advocacy efforts at the League of American Bicyclists, the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association and on PeopleForBikes' committees," said Moore. "I can't think of a better way to use my talents and experience to improve bicycling for everyone than helping lead our industry's advocacy efforts."
Moore replaces Alex Logemann, PeopleForBikes' policy counsel for eight years. Logemann left the group to lead DoorDash's national sustainability initiatives.
Prior to becoming QBP's general counsel, Moore worked in other roles for the company since 1996. He is also the founder and past president of the Minneapolis Off-Road Cycling Advocates and a past director of the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists, League of American Bicyclists, Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) and Nice Ride Minnesota. Moore currently sits on the PeopleForBikes Coalition Board of Directors and serves as the chair of PeopleForBikes' BPSA Trade Association Committee and Legal, Legislative and Safety subcommittee. Moore will relinquish these roles at the organization when he begins his work as general counsel.
"Matt has a long history of legal work in the bike industry and supporting PeopleForBikes and our initiatives. We couldn't ask for a more perfect fit in having him join our team as general counsel," said Jenn Dice, the president and CEO of PeopleForBikes. "His professional leadership with BPSA and playing a major role in its merger with PeopleForBikes, combined with his years of experience on our boards and subcommittees, uniquely position him to hit the ground running in his new role. That, and anyone who's met Matt knows he is a ton of fun."
PeopleForBikes pointed to Moore's already extensive resume of policy wins for the bike industry. In 2005, he worked with peers at 22 companies to present a unified defense and reach a cost-effective settlement in Proposition 65 litigation over lead content in bicycle components and accessories. Between 2012-2017, Moore worked with Trek, BPSA and outside counsel to successfully bring litigation in the Court of International Trade to correct the U.S. Customs' erroneous classification of bicycle cassettes, moving them from a 10% duty category to duty-free. Starting in 2018, he helped support PeopleForBikes' successful efforts to obtain multiple exclusions and exclusion extensions for e-bikes, bicycles and bicycle products from Section 301 tariffs, and in 2019 Moore worked in tandem with PeopleForBikes and BPSA to execute the successful merger of the two organizations.
"I look forward to working collaboratively with the industry and the PeopleForBikes team to execute strategies that effectively address the many challenges that confront us," said Moore. "From e-bike safety and education, to our state and federal legislative and regulatory work, to international trade issues and supporting domestic manufacturing, our agenda is a very full one. I invite leaders from across the industry to continue offering their guidance and support to PeopleForBikes as we continue this great work together."
Dice noted that Moore worked closely with this predecessor, Logemann, to pass model e-bike legislation, fight bad bike bills, challenge country of origin rulings and, most notably, saved the industry more than $300 million in Section 301 tariffs.
"Alex's portfolio of work for the bike industry was extensive. I can't begin to capture the breadth and depth of the hundreds of issues he led for more and better bicycling in the last eight years. Our team loved working with him and the legacy he left is profound," said Dice. "We are grateful for all that Alex did to set us up for success and wish him all the best at DoorDash. The baton pass from Alex to Matt will be pretty seamless — even the jokes will stay the same."
Moore will begin his new role with PeopleForBikes in early October. He can be reached at matt@peopleforbikes.org.
