Brook Watts steps down as organizer of Arkansas cyclocross events

Published April 21, 2021

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (BRAIN) — Brook Watts announced Wednesday that he will no longer be the organizer for the 2022 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships or a UCI World Cup cyclocross event to be held in October. Both events are scheduled to take place in Fayetteville.

The events have been subject to much discussion in recent weeks following the passage of several laws that many consider a violation of the rights of transgender people. Some have called for a boycott of the events.

"The situation in Arkansas remains problematic and unfortunately, I don’t see any satisfactory resolution," Watts said in an email. "I have sincerely, but unsuccessfully, attempted to work out my concerns and differences with constituents. However, regrettably, we were not successful."

Watts added, "I remain dedicated to continuing to use my position of influence in the cyclo-cross community to fight for equity in racing, and to ensure that the sport is accepting and welcoming to all."
