PowerTap releases trio of lower-priced power-metering road wheelsets

Published June 11, 2014

MADISON, Wis. (BRAIN) — PowerTap is launching three carbon road wheelsets that retail at a lower price than its previous carbon wheels.

All three retail for $2,199.99. PowerTap continues to offer alloy-rimmed wheelsets retailing for $999.99, but the new wheels are its lowest-priced carbon wheels.

“We feel strongly that the days of having race wheels and training wheels are over, with the AMP wheelsets you’ve got great options to choose from given your individual ride preferences with the best power meter available,” said Jesse Bartholomew, PowerTap's category manager.

The new AMP collection is built around two rim shapes: One is 35mm deep and the other is 50mm deep. Both are 24.5mm wide externally and feature a proprietary braking surface and brake pads.

The two wheel shapes are combined to create three wheelsets: one with 35mm front and rear, one with 35mm front and 50mm rear, and one pair with 50mm front and rear.

All three AMP wheels use the PowerTap G3 rear hub with Shimano or Campagnolo-compatible freehub and DT Swiss AeroComp spokes, 20 spokes front and 24 on the rear. Skewers and brake pads are included.

The 35mm wheelset weighs 1,617 grams;  the 35/50mm wheelset weighs 1,712 grams and the 50mm wheelset weighs 1,807 grams.
