Published December 11, 2013

SEATTLE, WA (BRAIN) — Multi-sport retailer REI has announced plans to open its second store in the Last Frontier. In spring of 2014, REI will open a 30,000-square-foot store in Fairbanks.

“Whether hiking, skiing or practicing yoga, Alaskans are some of the most active people in the country,” said Kevin Golic, REI retail director for the Washington and Alaska district. “REI is honored to join the Fairbanks community and help outfit them for their adventurous lifestyles.”

The first REI store in Alaska opened in Anchorage in 1979. The company has actively supported Anchorage-area non-profits and recreation destinations through various grants totaling $320,000.

REI will hire approximately 50 new employees to work at the Fairbanks store, which will house a bike shop and ski and snowboard shop, provide service and repairs and host free in-store classes.

REI is a member-owned cooperative with 132 stores and 5.1 million active members across the U.S.
