SRAM expands Guide brake line with Ultimate model

Published March 31, 2015

CHICAGO (BRAIN) — SRAM is expanding its Guide mountain bike disc brake line with the addition of the Guide Ultimate brakes, which promise improved performance and lighter weight than the original Guides, introduced last March.

The Ultimate brakes feature a new two-piece version of the Guide's CenterLine rotors, called CenterLine X. The new rotors have an aluminum spider and a steel brake track.

The Ultimates also have completely new aluminum four-piston S4 calipers, and carbon-bladed levers with SRAM's SwingLink lever cam and titanium hardware. The company said the new brakes have superior heat management and a re-designed seal and piston interface for ease of setup and improved consistency. The brakes will be available in Arctic Gray or Black anodized finishes.

The front brake, with rotor, hose, clamp, adapter and all bolts, weighs a claimed 360 grams. The Guide RSC brakes, the previous lightest model in the line, weighs a claimed 375 grams.

The new calipers will be available in May; the CenterLine X rotors will be available in July. The calipers, levers and hose will retail for $288 per wheel. The new rotors will retail for $72-$78, depending on diameter.
