Gary Newkirk Joins BRAIN Today

Published August 31, 2011

LAGUNA HILLS, CA (BRAIN)—Gary Newkirk, an industry veteran and a professional photographer, joins the staff at Bicycle Retailer & Industry News today as its director of sales and marketing.

Newkirk began his industry career selling and wrenching bikes at a small family-owned shop in Anaheim. While earning a degree in economics from UCLA, he sold bikes at Bikecology and later worked at Two-Wheel Transit.

He continued his career in cycling joining West Coast Cycles as an inside sales rep in the 1980s, working alongside Bob Margevicius and other West Coast Cycles’ veterans. Newkirk later moved to Blackburn Designs, working with its founder, Jim Blackburn, in sales and marketing.

But photography was one of Newkirk’s passions. He shot photos for Winning and was later associate editor at Triathlete magazine. Newkirk took his camera to a host of legendary events—the Coors Classic, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as well as the Barcelona Olympics and numerous Ironman events in Hawaii.

“Many in the industry know Gary. He’s been the magazine’s contract photographer, shooting dozens of photos for us at Interbike and other events,” said Marc Sani, the magazine’s publisher. “Gary brings a variety of skills and industry knowledge to the magazine, a true bonus for our staff,” Sani said.

Newkirk replaces Robert Roman, the magazine’s Southern California sales rep Roman left the magazine Aug. 31 to join Lifeboat Events, a tradeshow company that produces DealerCamp, PressCamp and Urban PressCamp. Roman had been with the magazine two years.

Newkirk can be reached at (949) 206-1677 ext. 208 or gnewkirk@bicycleretailer.com.
