Contador Blames Meat for Positive Test

Published September 30, 2010

MADRID, Spain (BRAIN)—Tour de France champion Alberto Contador claims a contaminated steak is to blame for his positive drug test.

According to an ESPN report, Contador's reasoning isn't far fetched, since the drug he's accused of taking is sometimes illegally given to beef cattle.

At a press conference on Thursday, Contador vowed to clear his name.

"It is a clear case of food contamination," Contador told a news conference in his hometown near Madrid, during which he appeared close to tears several times, according to ESPN. "I am sad and disappointed but hold my head high."

Clenbuterol is often used to speed up growth and increase muscle mass in animals, including chickens, cattle and pigs. And it's typically been used by people for bodybuilding.

Contador has been "formally and provisionally suspended," the UCI said.

"I think this is going to be resolved in a clear way," Contador added. "With the truth behind you, you can speak loud and clear, and I am confident justice will prevail."
