TAIPEI, Taiwan (BRAIN) — WTB launched a new mountain bike saddle at the Taipei International Cycle Show this week, the High Tail. The company said the saddle is designed to give increased rear tire clearance on full suspension 650b bikes, and was inspired by Pivot Cycles' president and founder, Chris Cocalis.
The High Tail saddle has a distinctive cut out at the rear to allow the extra tire clearance.
Cocalis said saddle clearance was a design limitation on a planned Pivot DH bike.
“It quickly became apparent that we weren't going to be able to use the geometry we wanted to use with a conventional saddle on our upcoming 27.5-inch carbon downhill bike," Cocalis said in a WTB release. "We wanted to maintain the same travel, chainstay length and rider positioning as on our current 26-inch Phoenix DH bike and this presented an overall clearance challenge with current seat and rail profiles. Something had to give, so we contacted WTB with the idea of a saddle to accommodate the rising popularity of the 27.5-inch full suspension market.”
The High Tail saddle is not just for downhill bikes, WTB said. It also is being aimed at large-wheeled
"You don’t usually get such a quick transition from gravity to all aspects of riding," said WTB's OEM sales manager, Jason Moeschler. "A big thank you is owed to Chris (Cocalis) for tipping us off.”
The High Tail will be offered in a $249.95 carbon option for cross country riders. A titanium–railed Team level and and chromoly Pro option will retail for $159.95 and $119.95, respectively. The saddles will be available worldwide in September.
Also at the Taipei show, WTB announced new carbon-railed options for its Volt and Rocket V shapes, also retailing for $249.95. Both the Volt and Rocket V saddles will also gain additional width options: 142mm and 150mm.
